Slovakia is home to more than 5,350 caves, including smaller overhanging caves. These caves are true treasures of the country and form part of its most significant natural heritage. Many are renowned across Europe and offer fascinating opportunities for trips filled with beauty and discovery. As many as 44 caves and abysses in Slovakia have been declared national natural monuments.
Near Liptovský Trnovec, there are three caves open to the public that are recognized as national natural monuments of Slovakia:
Demänovská Cave of Liberty
Demänovská Cave of Liberty is one of the most important parts of the largest cave system in Slovakia, with passages extending over 35 km. It is located on the northern side of the Low Tatras, specifically in the Demänovská Valley, just 16.7 km from our chalets.
The traditional circuit is 1,150 m long with an elevation change of 86 m and includes 913 steps. The long circuit measures 2,150 m, with the same elevation and 1,118 steps. The traditional tour takes about 60 minutes, while the long tour takes around 100 minutes. The average temperature in the cave ranges from 6.1 to 7°C.
During the tour, visitors can see unique stalactite and stalagmite formations, the underground Demänovka River, karst lakes, and characteristic passages shaped by river activity. On higher levels, fissures are visible, and the ceilings are decorated with rich dripstone formations.
Demänovská Ice Cave
Demänovská Ice Cave is the northern part of the well-known cave system in Demänovská Valley. It is notable for its permanent ice formations, impressive underground chambers, unique cave fauna, and rich history. The cave is located just 11 km from Liptovský Trnovec.
The visitor route passes through wide river passages connected by steep sections. The first part of the trail showcases stalactite and stalagmite formations, while the second part reveals the ice-filled sections of the cave. The total length of the tour is 650 meters with an elevation change of 48 meters, although visitors actually walk 800 meters. The entrance and exit are at the same elevation, with a distance of only 40 meters between them. The tour takes approximately 45 minutes, and the temperature in the cave during summer ranges from 0.4°C to 3°C.
Stanišovská Cave
Stanišovská Cave, the only cave in Liptov open year-round, is located in the northern part of Jánska Valley, less than 20 km from Liptovský Trnovec.
Together with Malá Stanišovská Cave, it is one of the most important hibernation sites for bats in Jánska Valley, hosting seven different species. Significant paleontological finds, such as cave bear bones, have been discovered in the cave, and archaeological research has revealed traces of medieval settlement.
The cave has a total length of 765 meters and a depth of 28 meters, with 354 meters accessible to the public. Tours last 45 to 60 minutes, and the cave maintains a constant temperature of around 6°C throughout the year. Visitors can explore the cave daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with tours starting every hour. Headlamps are provided, as the cave does not have electric lighting.
